Our Holstein heifers are purchased from a local dairy development yard. They refused to eat through a headlock, so were culled from their program. We buy them at about 8 months old, feed them in our yard over the winter, then turn them out with our family's Angus/Simmental cross commercial herd for the summer to get bred on pasture.
Is on her 2nd calf. Last freshening we let a small dairy borrow her, so she was milked by hand and machine daily. They sent her home after 4 months because she was letting calves nurse off her. After calving, she accepted another bum calf. When we brought Tulip's calves back, they latched right on and she happily let them.
Had her first calf 12/20. Raised 2 beef calves on pasture over the summer to 500# We milked her by hand and machine prior to putting these calves on her - she has great teats for hand milking!
